Maintaining Your Backyard Pool: The Ultimate Guide

Owning a backyard pool is a luxury, but it does come with its own set of chores and responsibilities. By ensuring your pool is regularly maintained, your pool will remain clean, safe, and ready for enjoyment all summer long.

At Pleasants Hardware, we offer a wide range of products to help you keep your pool in top condition. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to take proper care of your backyard pool.

Regular Cleaning

Keeping your pool clean of debris and bugs is essential for maintaining water quality and overall hygiene. We recommend skimming the surface daily to remove any and all leaves, debris, or insects.

In addition to skimming daily, using a pool vacuum to clean the pool floor and walls at least once a week will also ensure the cleanliness in your pool. A good pool brush will also be helpful should you need to scrub off any algae or dirt from the pool walls.

Water Circulation and Filtration

Proper water circulation and filtration are crucial to keep your pool water clear and free from contaminants. We recommend running your pool pump and filter system for at least 8 hours a day.

It is also critical to clean the filter regularly to ensure it operates efficiently. With storms or heavy use of your pool, the filter can be impacted even with daily cleaning. And if your filter is dirty, it won’t be able to remove impurities effectively. HTH Pool Filter Cleaner is great at helping your pool maintain clear water by keeping your pool filter working at maximum performance.

Chemical Balance

Maintaining the correct chemical balance in your pool water is vital to prevent algae growth, bacteria, and other harmful microorganisms. It is important to test your pool water at least twice a week using a reliable pool testing kit. Adjust the levels of chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness as needed by adding in PacifiClear Chlorine Tablets or using HTH pH Up or HTH pH Down.

Shock Treatment

Shocking your pool weekly (or after heavy use) will help kill any bacteria or algae that may be present. A shock treatment involves adding a high dose of chlorine to the water to destroy contaminants quickly and efficiently. We recommend either HTH Pool Shock or PacifiClear Pool Shock for shock treatments as they help keep the water crystal clear and safe for swimming.

Algae Prevention and Treatment

Algae can quickly turn your pool water from blue and clear to green and slimy. To prevent algae from growing, use an algaecide regularly and ensure proper filtration and chemical balance. By preventing algae from the get go, you will reduce the overall pool chemical treatment cost. If you’ve noticed algae forming, treat it immediately with a fast acting algaecide to prevent it from spreading.
