It seems that most entrepreneurs come to a line in the sand. If crossed, sends them on their journey of self-employment and success. This was the case with Albert Skaggs who had a comfortable career with Rose Acre Farms out of Seymour, Indiana. He was in a position, being well-compensated but with a company policy to overcome.
The policy: if you were late for work, no matter what the cause, you would be bumped back to your starting pay. During a snowstorm in 1977, Albert caught himself behind a dump truck that was struggling. He soon found himself at odds with the policy. It was then, Albert who had always been around construction decided to start his own company. Albert started out with bathroom and kitchen remodels. Then room additions until home building seemed like the next possible step.
Today Albert is no longer around, but his legacy lives on through his wife Mrs. Gayle, son Andrew, and Uncle Mike. They specialize in building custom homes ranging from modest to the highest of finishes.
Andrew, who has seen all of the changing styles and trends since he was in high school, remembers the struggles trying to make it through a downturn in the economy. Andrew said it was with sheer will, determination, and partners like Bender Lumber who helped Skaggs weather the storm. During this time Skaggs Builders, Bender Lumber, and salesman Dirk Cooper remained loyal to each other. This loyalty transcends time.
While Andrew works with homeowners to help select all the finishes, his Uncle Mike is the “Promise Keeper”, so to speak, making sure he keeps every promise Andrew made in the process. One of the secrets to staying organized and on schedule is the Pre-Construction meeting that happens every time between Dirk Cooper their Bender Lumber Customer Service Partner, Andrew, and homeowners. This cooperation and documentation allow Mike, who runs the build at the job site, to be fast and efficient. The process can continue with little interruption.
Andrew considers Dirk a true friend and partner with Skaggs Builders. The many successful years Dirk has been working with Skaggs make him the perfect addition to the Skaggs team.
Skaggs Builders and Bender Lumber have a long history of successful building projects. The future is bright for Skaggs Builders as they consider focusing on building a few specs and buying some investment properties to create a source of constant income.
