C R Custom Renovations Testimonial

By Ben Watters

Often, we see the very best builders or remodelers get their inspiration early on. Mostly while observing a family member who is skilled in this area. That is the case with C R Custom RenovationsCourtland Robertson of C R observed his father who was, you might say, a “Jack of all Trades”. He was not a full-time remodeler, but always had a job going as a “side hustle”. As a young boy, Courtland would be found at his father’s job sites observing and cleaning up. These early years would embed a love for creating that would influence Courtland’s desires to start his own company.

Ok, but it did not start out that way. After high school, Courtland put his energy into advanced degrees in law and law enforcement. Once involved in these careers, Courtland was frustrated with the daily routine. He remembered his first love of building and remodeling. It was then he started working for a contractor who would further influence his future endeavors. Courtland learned more than just how to layout a set of stairs. He developed a stronger work ethic and realized that in all situations you must create a win/win scenario.

After a few years working for his mentor, out of necessity Courtland needed to venture out on his own and started C R Custom Renovations, specializing in decks, patios, and other highly custom home improvement contracts. Courtland liked being in control of his own destiny and worked hard to get his business started. While trying to gain experience and generate leads, Courtland stumbled upon a Facebook group of remodelers and builders. This group involved demonstrations across the country at home shows and fairs. By mentoring with this group, Courtland learned how to manage his finances, scheduling, and became skilled at managing larger projects and builds. By sharing “Best Practices” and product guidelines, Courtland gained even more confidence in his abilities.

When talking with Courtland, he still does not accept credit for his success. His wife, Chayla, would be his main influencer and guiding light as she helps by keeping his books clean and is a fantastic finish painter. Courtland and Chayla have also found, if they transparently share information with all employees it will keep them engaged in the Win / Win scenario. The results……a happy client and a profitable company.

At one time, C R was a customer of the “Big Box” in the area. That was until the product quality was far from good. Courtland called Rick Followell a Customer Rep. who had stopped by the job site to offer help. When the replacement product was delivered, it was an obvious quality difference. Courtland realized that the small difference in price was well worth the service platform and quality of products. Today Courtland says of his Bender Lumber Sales Representative, that he can “trust Rick as his moral compass.” He depends on Rick to tell him the truth even when he must deliver bad news. In the future, Courtland will focus on energy-efficient remodels and homes. He can visualize passing down his business to his children in an apprenticeship type of relationship. At Bender Lumber, we look forward to this journey with C R Custom Renovations.
