How to Use a Paint Roller and Paint Brush

First, let's take a look at rollers. You want to make sure the roller is completely loaded with paint, but you don't want the paint running off it. To prevent overloading, lightly roll the filled roller over the washboard section of the tray. Begin painting in an a upper corner of the area and work from top to bottom. To ensure a proper spreading rate, make a V or W 2 feet wide by 2 feet long. Fill in the area and then finish off with light top to bottom strokes.

The most common mistake people make when using a roller is overspreading the paint. If the roller is making a sizzling or tearing sound during use, it's dry and needs more paint.

When using a brush, you should load the bristles one third to one half way up with paint. Next, remove the excess paint by lightly touching the bristles against the side of the container. Place the brush on the surface and drag it about 12 to 15 inches. Only about 25 to 30% of the brush should touch the surface. As you reach the end of the stroke, lift up to feather the end. Lightly brush back in the opposite direction and feather at that end. Going over the same area more than that will only increase the chance of brush marks. The next stroke should start about 2 to 3 inches away to reduce the possibility of lapmarks.
