How to Select a Paint Brush
Quality brushes should have long bristles for alkyd paints - or long fibers for latex paints - and should be as long as the brush is wide. Flagged, or split ends help silken each stroke and reduce brush lines. In addition, all bristles or fibers should be firmly attached to the handle by a brass collar, or ferrule. Rollers are popular for large wall areas and the length of the nap on the roller must be considered. Longer napped rollers are used for rough, textured surfaces. Smoother surfaces require the use of a shorter napped roller.
For interior projects, nylon/poly blend brushes should be used for latex paints and natural bristle brushes should be used for alkyd paints, stains, and varnishes.
There are three different brushes recommended for exterior paint projects - a 4 inch brush for large areas; a 1 and one half inch to three inch brush for trim, shutters, and windows; and a 1 and one half inch angular or flat sash brush for window sashes and molding.
