Decorative Paint Techniques: Washing
 With washing you actually blend colors together creating cloud-like swirls. You begin with a basecoat. A flat finish is recommended because it will allow the topcoat color to blend in. Once the basecoat is dry, it's time to wash on the topcoat. Take a damp rag and submerge it into a tray full of paint. Wring out the cloth, and using a circular motion, start washing in the center of the wall. At first you'll be rubbing paint on the wall, but as the cloth dries, you'll begin to remove some of the topcoat color. Continue rubbing to create a soft effect. Once you have it the way you want it to look, reload the rag with paint and move on to the next area. Periodically rinse out the cloth to get a fresh start. When the wall is done, step back to see how it looks. You may need to add color in areas that have been over rubbed.
