Decorative Painting: Sponging

Sponging can be done two ways - the first is by applying the glaze mixture with a brush over a dried base coat. Then, while the glaze is still wet, remove some of the glaze using a dampened sea sponge. Dab the sponge over the surface, rotating the wrist in different directions. As the glaze is removed, the color of the base coat shows through. The other method is to apply the glaze over the base coat with a sea sponge. Dab the sponge directly into the glaze mixture. Any excess glaze should be tapped out on a newspaper. Then dab the sponge over the base coat until almost all of the surface is covered. You might also want to experiment and use different colors to create a more dimensional effect.

Other textures can be created using the same application techniques - such as rolling a rag over the glazed surface, or pressing crumpled plastic dry cleaner bags into the wet glaze.
